La Crosse Technology BC500 Reviews

La Crosse Technology BC500 Review by Robert K. Tucker "Navyolsalt" (Simpsonville, SC)

Finally a charger that tells if the battery is done for and a charger that will discharge and recharge so the battery doesn't develop memory. Great Product!!

La Crosse Technology BC500 Review by dragonfly (occupied Maidu territory)

one of the best battery chargers that will plug into a car's cigarette lighter (also has 110 volt adaptor)... the only drawback is you can't set the charging rate (500 ma) - but you trade that for small compact size... charge any number of batteries from 1-4...

La Crosse Technology BC500 Review by I. Seligman

Ive tested this charger for several months on 50 NIMH Powerex 2700 batteries.
This charger is good for most batteries BUT it called 9 of the 50 (18%) batteries "DEFECTIVE" and would not charge them.

I then charged the 9 "defective" ones (according to the BC500) with my older Ansmann Powerline4 chargers, and got 3 batteries to then charge fine in the BC500. Then I used the Ansmann to further "dischage and then recharge" for several cycles on the other batteries. By doing so, I got 6 of the 9 "defective" batteries to work fine in the BC500. I used these 6 batteries with the same Nikon SB800 flash,(it's tough on batteries!) and had no problems with over 100 quick and strong flashes per charge. I tossed the 3 that would not charge fully after cycling-they were "bad" on both chargers.

Lesson learned. -Don't believe a battery is "defective" with the La Crosse BC500 till you charge it up with a less picky charger as I did. I would have unnecessarily thrown out 6 quite good batteries. They probably had their charge level just drop too low for the BC500's liking, while stored.

Bonus, of sorts.--The charger came with two of their own batteries that tested to ~500 mAh less than rated, after several charging cycles. Not good. I called La Crosse and they said the batteries would get better in time. Not these. I gave them away-why have 2000 mAh batteries as a "weak link" with 2700 mAh batteries?

Otherwise this is a good, not great charger for the money, limited by its fixed 500 mAh power.I like the visual display.
When on vacation, I'm taking my slightly larger, but more reliable Ansmann chargers, not thw BC500.
