The main reason I chose this machine and not another netbook is that the product description (and the one other review) mention a LCD resolution of 1366x768 pixel when in fact the resolution is only 1024 x 600, the same as most other netbooks. For me, this is a deal breaker and I am returning the computer to Amazon.

I bought the netbook for travel and it is exactly what I wanted. I agree that it is slow compared to my desktop (w/4 gigs of ram) but it is much faster than an old laptop I have and which the netbook was to replace. It has done so admirably.
I bought a usb optical drive for backup, and speakers to play internet radio. The volume was adequate if you are near the netbook, but I use it to listen from a distance, like a radio.
Also bought a wireless mouse since I am more comfortable with a mouse than touchpad. All of these can be used with my other computers so they are not tied to the netbook.
It hooked up to my wireless system with no issues.
I hooked it up to my 42' LCD TV and streamed Hulu seamlessly, another surprise. It did stutter when I watched White Collar on the USA site. The picture does not fill the screen but is excellent, even with White Collar. All that was needed for hookup to my Visio was a VGA cable and a stereo cable. No other setup was required. With only one gig and onboard video I did not expect it to work as well as it did. (Also nice, with the wireless mouse, to control the netbook from across the room.)
My guess is 2 gig ram might help for more seamless video on the White Collar site, but I see no real need for additional ram at this point. Same with shifting from win 7 starter to something more robust. Starter is fine.
I have not removed any of the supplied programs to date (which I usually do with a new computer to speed it up), but have no good reason to. I have MS Office for Small business and works great.
When the trial period ends for McAfee (still better than Norton) I will go through a general purge and replace it which I am sure will also speed it up (my experience).
All in all, I am a very happy camper.

I bought the Inspirion to be a secondary computer for home and work. I was not looking for blazing speed; just a portable word processor from a reliable company. It probably would have been fine, except it refused to work with my home network, even though my other four wireless devices are fine. After several hours of troubleshooting in vain, I called Dell Customer support, and the troubles really began.
The first tech was happy to help me, but only if I paid $129 for the fix (on a $299 computer!) -- I declined. I was transferred to Wireless support who tried earnestly but unsuccessfully to fix the issue, declared it a software problem and transferred me to Customer Care. Customer Care would not assist me since the vendor in their records did not match the vendor from which I purchased the unit. I spoke to supervisors, sent emails, and at each turn was politely and implacably informed that unless I could confirm the vendor information they had on file, they would not be able to assist me.
Five fruitless hours with Dell support over three days, and I gave up. I am returning the Dell and looking to buy from a different company. Love Amazon -- Dell ... not so much.
