Griffin Technology GB01902 Review by David H

Rolling out 6 iPhones to a department at work. We bought these cases. They are excellent. It's like body armor for the iPhone 4. Not completely waterproof, definitely water resistant. The iPhone sits inside a virtually fully enclosed plastic shell. Around that wraps a thick spongy silicone rubber case. The sleek iPhone ends up fairly chunky, but it is unlikely to get damaged and that's the point.

The entire front including front camera is covered by a hard plastic sheet which doesn't impair touch function at all. Gaming is fine with this case. The rear camera is not covered by plastic. However, the rear camera is very well sealed by a rubber flap. Sealed so well it is a bit tricky to get open. But the protection is excellent.

The cover for the charging dock, mute slide switch head phone port are a more forgiving to open and they don't really get in your way. The cover for the charging dock is perforated so as not to interfere with the speakers and indeed it does not.

The other buttons have no slide, they work through the spongy rubber covering just fine. Other than a little work to get the camera cover open there is zero effect on functionality with this case.

So in summary it is not waterproof but would certainly stand up to a brief pass through a lawn sprinkler, and unless you backed over your iPhone with your car or dropped a cinder block on it, makes the precious practically invulnerable to damage. For under $40.

If you want the maximum protection for your phone at a reasonable price, this is a great case, five stars. This case may be the best reasonably priced protection available for your iPhone. ($26) If you want easy pocket access, three stars. It will fit in a pocket if your pants are loose, but the non-slip rubber covering makes it difficult to remove from the pocket quickly. Skinny jeans? Fugedaboutit. If you want easy port access, two stars. The silence switch is difficult to get to, people with big fingers and no nails may find it impossible to use. My fingers are fairly slender and I still find it easiest to use the nail on my pinky finger to turn it on and off. Griffin should make this access larger. For the sync port I have an FM transmitter for use in the car and I had to trim the plastic case and the rubber case to make it work. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MODIFYING THE HARD PLASTIC CASE as the plastic is very hard and difficult to cut. My case does not have the notch for the camera cover mentioned by another reviewer and holding it out of the way does require a certain level of coordination. I have not experienced the trouble using the keyboard some complain about. It does limit access and I can see where those with larger fingers may have trouble especially if you are used to sliding your finger off the screen when unlocking the phone. I find a slide and hold works well. Those who are impatient likely will have difficulty too. If Griffin made the screen area slightly larger or the lip lower, either would probably solve this issue for those having an issue. The belt clip is not sturdy but works fine. The reviewers mentioning clip breakage leave me wondering if they are breakdancing with the phone on their belt. The clip could definitely be sturdier though. The only issue I have experienced with the clip is that several times, when leaning against something, the clip has flexed against the button turning on the phone in voice mode. This is how I found out the phone even had a voice mode. I have not had an issue with the phone coming out of the clip unintentionally and I like that the clip is fully detachable. The phone come out easily when I want it too. The case does not appear to impede reception and I can hear and talk with no apparent loss of fidelity. It is NOT completely water or weatherproof but offers a LOT of protection with all the port covers closed. You still have four small holes for the earpiece and eight holes on either side of the bottom for the speaker and microphone. I don't use the phone in a dock, but due to the size of the case I don't see it working in any dock where the recess isn't much larger than the bare iPhone. For any dock with a recessed connection, the recess would have to be fairly large. If the connection rises significantly above the surrounding surface it should work but I haven't seen too many docks like this. The sync port is pretty well recessed into the case. Good for protection, bad for access. All of the above notwithstanding, overall I think this is one of the best cases out there for what I want: excellent protection for my phone at a reasonable price. All the negatives listed total one star in my book. Too many people want it all; childproof protection (ha!), total liquid immersion protection, complete and instant access (try no cover), paying next to nothing, and that case just doesn't exist and probably never will. In the end you have to ask yourself; what do you want out of your case. Oh, it's not very pretty either, this case is all about protection.

I needed a case so my Iphone 4 could survive the elements and the occasional drop. After reviewing this and the Otterbox, I went with the Griffin. The case itself is phenominal. Maximum protection with no noticable loss in functions. All the flaps for the ports are easily accessible. I even have a screen protector beneath the protective screen cover with the case & the screen is still very sensitive. It was said that the flap over the camera lens is terrible, but since I don't take a lot of pictures it wasn't an issue. Plus when I did take pictures, the flap still wasn't as big as an issue it's made out to be.

One thing that IS a big issue as stated in other reviews is the belt clip. Amazing that they could design such a fabulous case, but fall that short on the belt clip. Holds pretty well, but difficult to put back after using the phone. A type of cradle case could have easily been designed, making this the ultimate protection for your Iphone. Also I know people who already broke their clip and you can't just buy a replacement clip. Would have given this 10 stars, if it wasn't for the belt clip. It's too bad - Griffin was sooooooo close to perfection!
